What’s the difference?
Grade 5 titanium and Grade 5 titanium alloy are generally the same material. The difference is mainly how the terms are used, rather than a difference in composition or performance.
1. Titanium (pure titanium)
Technically refers to commercially pure titanium, such as Grades 1–4.
-
Generally softer and more ductile than Grade 5.
-
Excellent corrosion resistance.
-
Often used in chemical processing, marine applications and medical products.
2. Grade 5 titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V)
A titanium alloy containing aluminium and vanadium to improve its mechanical properties.
-
High strength-to-weight ratio.
-
Stronger than commercially pure titanium.
-
Excellent corrosion resistance.
-
Good fatigue performance and heat resistance.
-
Commonly used in aerospace, motorsport and high-performance engineering.
